Yin Yoga: A Love Letter To Stillness

melting heart pose with a twist

Yin yoga is a love letter to stillness and an invitation to be present.

To be present with yourself does not allow space for self-judgment. When you live this way, you are practicing yoga: you are living fully.

Yin yoga has gained a lot of popularity in recent years and with good reason. This beautiful practice is like an antidote to our busy lifestyle, and it creates a balance in the yoga world that it is often more yang oriented.

Not only does yin yoga help create a balance, the practice also offers health benefits on a physical, mental, and energetic level.

Many of us are used to strengthening and stretching our muscles in other styles of yoga or exercise, however, many are unaware of the profound benefits of stretching our deep fascia and how to do so. By working with our deep fascia – which is exactly what we do in yin yoga – we will increase our flexibility and mobility so we will keep moving sore free as we age. As a little side bonus this increased flexibility will also be noticeable when you practice yang styles of yoga as you will most likely find yourself moving through the poses with more ease.

Our fascia is a part of our connective tissue and is found throughout the body – you can imagine it as a spider web. Stretching the fascia will lead to lubrication and hydration of the entire body meaning you will experience a wider range of mobility. Just as we want strong muscles we want our fascia to be mobile and flexible.

But not only will you experience more flexibility. You will most likely also experience that many of your pains and aches subside. This is because our tension often is in the fascia and not in our muscles so once we start stretching the fascia a couple of times per week we will start releasing the tension that causes our pains and aches.

On a mental level yin yoga is wonderful for cultivating grounding and calm, which can help reduce stress and anxiety. When we are in a state of stress we are in our sympathetic nervous system (fight and flight), meaning the body thinks we are in danger. In yin yoga we focus on the Dan Tien breathing (deep belly breathing) and stillness which naturally will help the nervous system calm down and activate the parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest) which will lead to more calmness, grounding and feelings of trust.

You do not need to practice yin yoga every day in order to experience these benefits. I do, however, recommend that you practice yin yoga a couple of times per week to experience the full benefits of this practice.

If you are interested in diving deeper into all the health benefits of yin yoga and learn more about this wonderful practice, one of our trainings might just be what you are looking for. In our trainings we go deep into every aspect of yin yoga, including all the health benefits.

Take a Leap

vision board suly-resort-and-spa - yin yoga certification

Take a leap

Take a deep breath, close your eyes and imagine how amazing it would feel to have accomplished your wildest dreams. Maybe you are traveling the world. Perhaps you are a full time yoga teacher. Or maybe you are living in your dream home surrounded by your spouse and kids.

No matter what comes to your mind I bet it feels pretty incredible. But maybe there is also a little voice of doubt in the back of your mind? That little voice that says it is never going to happen. It could also be fear that is present. Fear of what others will think. Fear of failing.

I am here to tell you that your dreams can come true. Whatever it is that keeps you awake at night, that sets your soul on fire and what you daydream about on your way to work can come true.

But it is not going to happen just like that. You have to meet the Universe halfway there. So let us take a look at how to accomplish your goals and dreams.

Set goals and write them down

What are your goals? Travel more? Work less? Make more money? Start your own business? Do a yoga teacher training? What is it you want to accomplish this year? Be as specific as possible – e.g. make €100,000 in 2021 as opposed to make more money, do yin yoga 3 x week instead of do more yin yoga, take one day a week off as opposed to take more time off, go to Bali as opposed to travel the world …). The more specific you can be, the better. Then write them down so you can visually see your goals in front of you.

Create a vision board

This is the fun part! Get your card board, scissors, glue, glitter and colorful pencils and get creative. Print out images that embody your goals. It can be anything and everything as long as it makes you think of and connect to your goals when you see the images. Put the vision board somewhere where you will see it every day. The mind understands words and the body understands pictures so it is important that you see your goals.

Visualize

As mentioned the body understands images so go even deeper into this by visualizing your goals and dreams. Visualize what it is you want. You can do it in meditation, while riding the train or bus, while on the toilet, before going to sleep, before getting up in the morning, while waiting for your coffee to brew … Do it as often as you possibly can.

Get to work

This is the part where most people struggle. Writing down lists, creating a vision board and visualizing are all fairly easy and mostly also fun to do. However, sitting down and doing the actual work is where most people start coming up with all sorts of excuses. Let’s watch Netflix, do laundry, go out for a drink with friends, go to brunch, read another book about starting a business, scroll through Instagram … We all do this sometimes.

But in order for this to work you actually have to, well, work. There is no shortcut. There is no secret ingredient. There is no magic wand. You just have to stay the course and put in the work. When you fall down, get rejected, fail and feel stuck, you get back up, dust yourself off and get back to work.

Surrender and trust the Universe

As always it is a balance. Do not work yourself into the ground and forget to rest. Do not burn the candle at both ends. Once you have put in the work, surrender. Trust that you have done your part and that the Universe will do its part too (remember what I said earlier; you only have to meet the Universe halfway there). It is always a balance between effort and surrender.

These are my tools for how I manifest my goals and dreams. And remember; believe in yourself. Believe you can accomplish anything, and that all your dreams and desires can come true. I believe in you!

Love always, Alex & The Yin Yoga Therapy Team

Let 2021 be the year you step into your power!

alex - founder yin yoga teacher training yoga alliance school

2020 is coming to an end, and while this year has been strange, challenging and emotional for many people it has also given many of us a chance to slow down, reflect and spend more time with our loved ones.

Perhaps this year has made you more grateful for your home, your health, your family, the money you have in your bank account, that you still have a job, the internet … It is so easy to be caught up in a cycle of complaining but this year has taught us how blessed many of us truly are.

It has been a year of deep reflection for many. For years we have been living in such a ‘go,go,go’ society, and now we have finally had the opportunity to slow down and turn inwards.

Perhaps you have come to realize that the life you are living is not in alignment with your values. Perhaps you have realized that your job is not what you want to be doing for the next 10 years. Maybe you have discovered that you want to spend more time at home and less time on the road. Perhaps you want to spend more time with your family and close friends as opposed to working late every night.

2020 has for many people been a year of reflecting on what our true core values are, and if you are one of those that have discovered your life is not currently in alignment with your values, I would like to congratulate you. Going inwards and reflecting is no easy task (it’s much easier to be busy than reflecting on your life) so be proud of yourself for doing the inner work.

However, inner reflection is only one part of the equation. Now that you know what you want and what your true core values are how are you going to transform and step into your power?

I encourage you to set aside some time and set your intentions for 2021. Make yourself a cup of your favorite beverage, wrap yourself in a fuzzy blanket and pull out your journal.

What are your intentions for 2021? What steps will you take towards your dream life? How do you feel? What do you want more of?

You can write it as a list or in whichever form that feels the most aligned for you. Write in the present tense, and truly feel and connect to the words.

Ready to take the next step towards your dream life?

Maybe one of the things you have realized this year is that you wish to dive deeper into the world of yoga and maybe even start teaching yoga. If this is you, then you will love the teacher trainings we have scheduled for next year. We offer a 200 Hour Yin Yoga & Yoga Foundations Teacher Training ONLINE which is perfect if you are looking for your very first teacher training. In this training we will cover all basic foundations, theory and philosophy of a classic yoga and meditation teacher training with a special focus on yin yoga.

Psst … if you sign up before December 31st 2020 there is an early bird discount. You can sign up for the training here and read more about it.

Dive into the yin world

If you are a more experienced yoga teacher and you long to dive deeper into the world of yin yoga, the flow of chi, the Taoist elements and the meridians the 50 Hours Online Yin Yoga Therapy Teacher Training is for you.

In this training we will dive deep into how you can use yin yoga as therapy both physically, mentally and energetically. This is a small, personal and interactive training. There will be a maximum of six people joining the training meaning you will have lots of opportunities to ask questions and connect with your teacher and the other students.

We wish you a very happy, blessed & abundant new year!

With much love,

The Taoist Element Earth

This Sunday our Yin Yoga Zoom class is all about the Taoist element of Earth. Here we find stability, stamina, integrity, a healthy self-esteem and we are able to stay away from unnecessary worry. With this energies flowing freely within us we are grounded in our body and the present moment, nourishing ourselves well.

Earth Poster yin yoga teacher training
Earth Poster yin yoga teacher training

Here I share some of the things we teach in our trainings about this element there as well:

The Element of Earth is stabilising and mediating; it is the energy of peacekeeping. Earth is patient, thoughtful, and calm. In connection with the Earth Element we arrive home, deeply connected to the centre of our being we can move in all directions, but always know our way back home.

Earth represents the core of the body, balance and neutrality. Here we know and connect to our true source of power and have the knowledge that all we need is inside us, here and now, grounded and present.

Just as we assimilate nutrients through the process of digestion, we assimilate life experiences through the Element Earth. A strong Earth aspect helps to digest our thoughts and our accept fate. With this energies free flowing we are able to experience genuine happiness by simply being happy with what we already have.

Key here is not to keep our minds too busy with over-thinking and rumination, or empathy and constant worry about the happiness of others. Too much of pensiveness hinders us from being calm and grounded, it weakens the harmony between the mind-body connection.

While the Earth element is warm and nurturing, it can also become easily self-centred, as it believes it is the centre of everything. Earth is protective and the represent the roots that hold everything together, however, it can also become controlling. It reveals the challenging issues of self-worth and self-trust.
Also the aspects of guilt and shame can be addressed here. They are usually a result of living by someone else’s values. By accepting and appreciating ourselves for who we are and what we bring to this world we find the way to love ourselves unconditionally.

In balance, the Earth element gives us strong muscles, vibrant energy and the ability to think clearly. We are at ease, calm, stable and grounded. When the Earth Element is in flowing undisturbed we are able to nourish ourselves and those around us in a supportive manner. There is integrity in form and action and appropriate nourishment allowing us to have strength and stability in body, mind and actions.

Poses:

In the poses we will work with the spleen and stomach meridians. Both the Earth meridians are crossing our abdomen, therefore all asana that involve our front torso are most suitable to relate to the Earth element. They both are crossing the front side of our ankle and knee, while the stomach meridian comes down our chest, therefore for example a Saddle with our back on a bolster and the arms up (spleen also close to under the arms) is an ideal Earth pose. Sphinx and Seal are activating the spleen and stomach meridians in the abdomen, especially also if you feel a stretch along top of thighs. An Ankle Stretch connects to the stomach meridian in a very effective acupressure way (St 42, 43, 44) on top of our feet.

Acupressure Points:

A wonderful acupressure point here is SP 6 San Yin Jiao (crossing of three yin meridians spleen, liver and kidney) -not advised when pregnant- just four fingers up the inside ankle along the medial crest of the tibia.

Pressing this point is especially helpful if you’ve been feeling weighed down due to digestive disturbances and helps to support and build the digestive system overall. As the great yin point it relates to our womb, the genital system and our hormones. It moves and cools blood and eliminates stasis and can calm our mind.

Energetically it is beneficial to all internal processes, to get harmony in “the home within ourselves”. Most people will be able to stimulate this point for example in a forward fold like the Caterpillar while we are compressing the Earth meridians in our abdomen and stretching them on the legs and chest.

And to balance it there is ST 36 Zu San Li. Loosely translated as “walk an extra 100 miles” this is our great yang point a hand-with under the knee next to the tibia. Supporting all our yang aspects, I use it as energy booster and for rejuvenation, and it is a great point for all kinds of indigestion and gastric pain, insomnia or mania.

This two points together make a great grounding and energy boosting combination, evoking all the wonderful earth aspects flowing freely. In the class on Sunday i show you exactly how to find them.

Balanced living: Making the Commitment

online ad 4 yin yoga teacher training

Balanced living and well-being means considering all aspects of your life: work, rest, fitness and health, food, mental peace and emotional well-being. And while for some of us one or the other aspect for a balanced living might come easy, others require more attention. Sometimes it’s a little of “All this stuff we know we should be doing… “. For me this is the greatest benefit of my yoga practice: It reminds me of who I want to be. Yin Yoga helps us to focus. While we are working on our flexibility we also practice mindfulness principles to help us listen to our body closely, promote mental clarity and make the path free for more emotional stability. And to add a little fitness, cardio-vascular exercise and muscle strength to the equation we decided to offer you next to our regular Yin Yoga Healing Session on Zoom now a Yang Flow practice as well. The commitment to meet and show up helps to really put our good intentions into practice. Are you ready to commit?

Activate your Immunity and Self-Healing Powers During Crisis

If you want to boost your own immunity without leaving the house here are some great acupuncture points to use daily, that may help you feeling better, boost your innate self healing abilities or even to decrease pain.

The points I introduce to you are based on Miriam Lee. In her book, Insights of a Senior Acupuncturist she describes 10 powerful points, she calls them the 10-Greats.

Acupuncture points can also easily function as acupressure points, and you can use this knowledge simply for yourself or your near ones by applying pressure with love and healing intention.

With practice you can influence the points with your thoughts and by channeling your focus and awareness. With regular use of pressure point stimulation you will be helping your body achieve greater interconnectedness, which sets the stage for vibrant production and freely flowing of Chi.

yin yoga teacher training at The Body-Mind-Soul Centre 17
How to use these points:

Apply gentle pressure (never cause pain) using your fingers or thumbs. Alternate with steady pressure and small movements. Your contact on these points encourages the Qi to get moving through meridians. Do not use an acupuncture point if it is under a mole, wart, varicose vein, bruise, cut, or if the skin at the point is injured in any way. All of the meridians and points are present on both sides of the body, be sure to contact the points on both the left and right for the best results.

Utilising the healing potential of these points is both an art and science. The skill of getting results comes from experience – so explore, wonder, feel and trust your intuition. You could work with the points by massaging a healing oil or salve on them as well. I like to use camphor infused apricot oil.

How to locate the points:
  • Be centered, grounded, and connected to your breath and energy.
  • Allow your energy to guide you as you gently place your finger or thumb on the acupressure point
  • As you make contact, allow all of your mental focus and awareness to seep through your body to the acupressure point.
  • Allow your pressure to sink into the point.
  • Always notice how your pressure is being received.
  • If you apply on others:
    • Ask the person to verbalize if they want more or less pressure.
    • Notice if their breathing becomes restrained (lighten your pressure), or more relaxed (you have the right amount of pressure).
  • Keep your intention focused while sensing the Qi (energy) at the acupressure point.
  • You will feel an urge to vary the depth, to use small circular massage, or to be still – follow that urge. These urges are your intuition responding to the Qi. It is your direct guidance from the Qi. Your contact will vary from person to person, and from point to point.

Here are the Great-10 wonderful acupuncture points to activate your immunity and self-healing abilities. All you need to know are actually only 5 locations, as they will be stimulated on both of the body sides.

Large Intestine 4 – He Gu – Joining Valley

acupoint 7 yin yoga teacher training
How to locate LI 4:
  1. Spread your fingers and thumb, the point is on the back side of the hand.
  2. Gentle squeeze in the center of the web between the thumb and first finger.
  3. In order to get the full benefit of LI 4, you need to get the energy moving by making little circles while applying pressure.

*Do not use this point on pregnant women!

Traditional Uses:
  • Relieves headaches, cough and sinus congestion, tooth aches
  • Alleviates all upper body tension, hence its also called the ‘Great Gate’

LI 4 the without any doubt most used acupuncture point of all due to its pain alleviating qualities all over the body. It is the main point for the five senses, relieving fever, cold, improves immunity, lowering high blood pressure. It influences the circulation of chi and blood. The Large Intestine is actually also the home to much of our immune system. The colonies of bacteria and micro flora in our bowels have implications in our ability to fight off pathogens. It just might be the case that your colon is involved with the sniffles, allergies, frequent colds and flus, headaches. A simple indicator of good health: if your poop looks good and smells okay, you’ve got a good chance of being healthy and happy. If it’s just a foul-smelling mess, or just a hard block of constipation, you can guess, it’s not just a reflection of what’s going on inside, it actually is what’s going on inside. It’s a clear message to clean up and pimp up your game.

LI 4 is your ‘Marie Kondo’, a great point to help you sort out what you no longer need to help you sparkle.

Large Intestine 11 – Qu Chi – Pool at the Bend

acupoint 6 yin yoga teacher training
How to locate LI 11:
  1. Bend your elbow
  2. Find the end of your elbow crest on the outside arm
Traditional uses:

General immunomodulation

  • Homeostatic effect
  • Great to release ‘heat’ for example fever, skin diseases, allergies, inflammation

In Acupuncture heat is also another way of talking about “inflammation”. In the process of life there is a metabolic fire that consumes fuel and oxygen. This fire is used to run the physiological processes that move and maintain us and and all the other things that it takes to maintain being a warm-blooded human, but fire can also easily burn.

To keep the flame bright but steady LI 11 is your hero.

Stomach 36 – Zu San Li – Leg Three Mile

acupoint 5 yin yoga teacher training
How to locate Stomach 36:
  1. Place your hand just below the kneecap
  2. Feel for the shin bone, then slide to the outside of the leg about one inch.
  3. ST 36 is just below the lower edge of your hand and 1 inch to the outside of the shin.
Traditional Uses:
  • Rejuvenates, relieves fatigue
  • Revitalizes our energy system
  • Relieves digestive issues (bloating, cramps, pain)
  • Helps restore the Qi when recovering from long illness

Walking was the way to get to where you were going therefore the name “Leg Three Miles” tells us that ST 36 can give us the energy to walk more miles, even if we are already exhausted. It also helps to boost the metabolism and aids in digestion. Use ST 36 to restore energy or when there is any digestive complaint.

ST 36 is your inner alchemy point for a vibrant life.

Lung 7 – Lie Que – Broken Sequence

acupoint 3 yin yoga teacher training
How to locate Lung 7:
  1. Bring your hands together to a “thumb shake”
  2. Place the index finger of the other hand behind the inside wrist
  3. Find the point just right under your index finger tip
Traditional Uses:
  • Stimulates the descending and dispersing of lung qi
  • Relieves respiratory diseases
  • Relieves scratchy throat, runny nose, congestion, sneezing
  • Relieves chills/fever and body aches
  • Main point to release neck pain

LU 7 is my most favorite point to address the lung meridian and it is a key point for boosting the immune system. It is excellent for runny noses, congestion, chills and fever, scratchy throat and sneezing because it is basically activating your body’s response to viral attacks.

LU7 is your body guard, fighting off viruses and bacterias

Spleen 6 – San Yin Jiao – 3 Yin Intercrossing

acupoint yin yoga teacher training

How to locate Spleen 6:
  1. Place your hand on the inner ankle bone with the pinky finger on the high point
  2. The edge of your first finger is how high up the point is from the ankle
  3. SP 6 is in the center of inner surface of the lower leg and at the edge of your first finger
Traditional Uses:
  • Support the smooth flow of Qi and blood and the menstrual cycle
  • Relieves menstrual cramps and premenstrual syndrome
  • Stops pain, calms the mind
  • Supports the quality of blood, moves and cools the blood
  • Nourishes your Yin

*Do not use this point on pregnant women

This point is where the Qi of the Spleen, Liver and Kidney Channels meet, nourishing to these organs and therefore it’s a very powerful point. As the great yin point it relates to our womb, the genital system and our hormones. This action might be also easy also too much due to its uterus connection for pregnant women.

In general it helps with blood flow, the lymphatic flow and with emotional regulation. Energetically it is beneficial to all internal processes, to get harmony in “the home within ourselves”.

SP 6 is the point for balance and harmony within.

It is a great point to combine with ST 36 to relieve fatigue and to bring yin and yang in balance. I love to combine these two to boost the overall energy of the body, the health of my organs and the peace of my mind.

Alexandra teaching at the yoga therapy training India - 3

In times of crisis, your body and mind can easily fall into distress. Staying connected, practicing meditation, yoga, and self-care as well as resting boosts your physical and mental resilience and strengthens immunity.

Give yourself and your close ones some love with these acupressure points, practice makes perfect!

May you be healthy now and always,

Top-3 Surfing Tips For Beginners to Get Started Surfing in Sunny Goa this season!

surf 3 at the yoga therapy training India

Surfing isn’t something you’re likely to just “pick up”, but plenty of people have it on their bucket list. Find here our Top-3 Surfing Tips For Beginners to get started surfing in sunny Goa already this season.

surfing-image-soul yin yoga ttc

1 – Don’t Learn by Yourself. No matter how easy you think it looks, never, ever approach surfing by yourself. Not one wave is the same, so your playground is constantly changing. Elements such as wind, tides and swells are affecting the waves you surf differently every day. It can be very challenging some days less, but it is a learning process and once you catch your first wave, that’s it, you’re hooked! Having a great instructor by your side is fundamental to get the attempt of your first surfing adventure out in the ocean and avoid injuring yourself and others.

2 – Surf Beginners Waves. Appropriate beach and waves are crucial for beginning surfers to be successful. Goa offers the perfect waves in a safe environment to learn to surf and to get improving in a smooth way as long as you learn how to navigate the sweet Arabian Sea waves! Tackle small waves before you attempt larger ones. Even though you may feel ready, unless your intructor says you are ready, you may actually be not! Never under estimating the power of the ocean waves and upgrading your surfing skills is also a matter of the right amount of dedication.

3 – Have a Fun-mindset. No matter what you do and where you are, if you are not having fun, it is not worth it! Always remember the awesome quote by Phil Edwards: “The best surfer out there is the one having the most fun.” No matter if you are a boy, a girl and how experienced you are, forget about how it should be and embark yourself to the ultimate surfing adventure in Goa this season!

Lastly, getting to practice yoga before surfing is optimal. Gentle morning yoga is definitely the best way of waking up the body, especially to bring flexibility in the spine and get ready to paddle, paddle, paddle.. before surfing!
If you are new to surfing, you might not know that every spot has its own “vibe”. Some spots are more “localized” than others. This means some local surfers are more open than others. These surfers might have been surfing these waves for years, since they are kids. When you get to a surf spot, take time to feel the vibe and respect the local surf community.

Join our surf community in North Goa for 8 days of surfing, yoga and fun!

Surf Love & Freedom,
Eleonora
